A Centerville native, Ron played baseball and basketball for Centerville Junior College and was also a member of the college's first–ever football team in 1963. He was a starting running back for the Golden Falcons and helped lead them to a 4–4–1 record in their inaugural season. Ron averaged in double figures in basketball as a freshman. He led the baseball team with a .430 batting average his first year and then hit .400 as a sophomore. After graduating from college, Ron returned to his hometown and started a career in education that lasted for nearly four decades, coaching football, basketball and track for more than 30 years. He has also been a member of numerous civic and professional organizations in Centerville.
