Akean Shackleford

Men's Soccer
Induction Year: 2024

Akean Shackleford left the Indian Hills Community College campus as the most decorated individual in men's soccer history. When Shackleford returns on Saturday night for his Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the Jamaican native will still hold that distinction.

On Saturday night, the two-time All-American will officially be inducted into the Indian Hills Athletics Hall of Fame as a first-ballot selection as part of the Class of 2024 with a ceremony at halftime of the Indian Hills Men's Basketball game.

Six seasons removed from Shackleford's record-breaking career at Indian Hills, the men's soccer team has continued to soar to new heights, including back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 11 championships and a trip to the national tournament this past season. The Warriors have garnered numerous All-American honors and team and individual accolades along the way. Through all the triumphs for the program, one thing constant has remained – Shackleford's name continues to sit atop the record books, by a wide margin.

In nine seasons prior to Shackleford's arrival in Ottumwa, the men's soccer program saw just one winning season, including four-straight losing campaigns. Under first-year head coach Jon Fridal in 2016, Shackleford and the Warriors quickly turned around a flailing program and ascended to national prominence.

The 2016 squad saw an increase of five wins, posting a program-record 11 wins on its way to the NJCAA Region 11 quarterfinals. Shackleford powered the Warrior offense to become the program's first-ever All-American, earning a second-team nod as a freshman behind school records of 22 goals and 49 points.

Shackleford returned for his sophomore campaign and once again exceeded all expectations. The forward guided the Warriors to its highest national ranking in program history while capturing Indian Hills' first-ever NJCAA Region 11 championship. The Warriors advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament in Prescott Valley, AZ and made a thrilling run in pool play before falling in double overtime to eventual national champion Tyler Junior College (TX), a game many considered to be the true national title game featuring star-studded lineups.

For his efforts, Shackleford was recognized as the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Player of the Year while collecting first-team NJCAA All-American honors following another record-shattering season. Shackleford poured in 33 goals and 71 total points, records that still stand to this day.

In total, Shackleford owns the top two single season goals, points, and shots records along with single game goals and points and career points (120), goals (55), and shots (127).

Shackleford's two years at Indian Hills catapulted the program into a new era that continues to thrive. While Shackleford's playing career came to an end following stints at Southern Methodist University and Lindsey Wilson College, the Hall of Famer continues to impact the Indian Hills program through the organization of its annual alumni match each August, gathering former teammates and friends from around the world to make a trek back to Ottumwa where his Hall of Fame career began.

Jon Fridal, former Indian Hills Men's Soccer Head Coach on Shackleford

"Akean had a tremendous impact on our soccer program during his time at Indian Hills. The growth he showed not only as a soccer player, but as a student and a person is a testament to how dedicated he was to succeed. His statistics on the field jump off the page and speak for themselves along with the success that he helped the program achieve. However, what many people won't know about is the positive influence and the larger than life personality that he brought to campus every day. Akean is Indian Hills through and though, and he's a true Warrior. I couldn't be more proud of what he's accomplished in his career, but also in how's he's developed as a man. Congratulations Akean!"
